Bilharzia detection in urine

Schistosomiasis, schistosoma, bilharzia

When to request this test

Non specific symptoms like abdominal pain, hematuria (blood in urine), diarrhea, fatigue, or urinary frequency in areas where schistosomiasis is endemic.

Interferences & limitations

  • Intermittent egg excretion: the number of eggs in the urine can fluctuate, with some individuals passing eggs only intermittently
  • This means that even if the patient is infected, the eggs might not be present in the urine at the time of collection, leading to false-negative results
  • Timing of urine sample: for optimal egg detection, urine should be collected in the early morning, follow the sampling protocol
