When to request this test

Patients living in regions with high prevalence or engaging in high-risk behaviors (e.g. injecting drug use, tattoos).

Interferences & limitations

  • False negative results: some RDTs may fail to detect low levels of antibodies, particularly in the early stages of infection or in individuals with weakened immune responses (e.g. immunocompromised patients)
  • False positive results: cross-reactivity with other antigens, autoimmune diseases

A confirmation test (ELISA or PCR) is required to diagnose an active infection
