Tissue biopsy
Sampling protocol
Preferably before the patient is treated with antibiotics.
- Large biopsy or tissue specimen are divided into smaller pieces (0.5 cm in diameter)
- With aseptic technique transfer the specimen to a sterile container and immediately bring it to the laboratory
- If transportation is prolonged for more than one hour, place the biopsy in a tube with transport medium
- Mask
- Gown
- Gloves
- Sterile forceps
- Sterile specimen container
- Tissue or fluid is always superior to a swab specimen
- For small tissue samples, add a few drops of non-bacteriostatic saline to prevent the specimen from drying out or cover with sterile gauze moistened with sterile saline
